Famous as the lead singer of the Irish pop group The Nevada, he is also well known for his Irish chart-topping solo recordings, which include "Love Is All / Morea" (1975); "Broken Promises" (1976); and "You're My Day, You're My Night / Morena" (1977).
In the late 1960s, he began his music career as the frontman of the Irish band The Colours. Later, he formed and fronted a band called Wheels and released several hit singles with the group.
He represented his native country in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest.
He and his siblings Flo, Olive, Fran, Liam, Des, and Joe were raised in Milltown, Dublin, Ireland. After divorcing his first wife, model Patricia Ward, he married dancer Norma Hurley; he has daughters named Kimberley, Kristina, and Stephanie.
In the early 2000s, he toured Ireland with American pop singer Rita Coolidge.
