He was discovered while playing at 20 Grand, a nightclub in Detroit. He played on 'Maybe Your Baby' by Stevie Wonder.
He was in Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in the mid-1970s.
He married Elaine in 1994 and had four sons together named Little Ray, Redman, Gibson, and Jericho.
His music was used in the paranormal comedy films Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, both of which starred Bill Murray.
