He became the first player in St. Louis Cardinals history to have multiple seasons with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.
He had two daughters, Raquel and Danielle, with his wife Yolanda.
He replaced All-Star Willie McGee as the center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals.
