Former Mexican-American southpaw who was an IBF champion at the light middleweight level and competed for the United States in the 1992 Olympics.
He moved from Mexico to the United States in 1976.
He won gold at the 1992 World Challenge.
He raised three sons: Raul Jr., Arturo, and Giovanni.
He fought Shane Mosley in 2003; the bout was ruled a no-contest after a clash of heads prevented the fight from continuing.
