He graduated with highest honors from West Georgia College in 1980, having served as student government president. He went on to earn a law degree from the University of Georgia.
Before joining McKenna Long & Aldridge, he worked for nearly two decades at a firm called Arnall, Golden and Gregor.
He was born in Dublin, Georgia, and raised in Warner Robins, Georgia.
He helped Newt Gingrich issue an ethics-based complaint that resulted in the resignation of Democratic House Speaker Jim Wright.
