One of the most decorated shooters of his time, he won three gold medals in the 25 m rapid fire pistol event.
He was beaten by Afanasijs Kuzmins in the qualification round for the 1988 Seoul Olympic games.
He was awarded a total of five medals in the Olympic games, seven medals in the World Championships, 18 medals in the World Cup Final, and 10 medals in the European Championships.
He married fellow Olympic shooter Anke Völker-Schumann; they had a son together.
He and Michael Phelps are both celebrated Olympic gold medalists.
