As part of the Intercosmos program, he became the first Indian in space and flew aboard the Soyuz T-11.
He was a squadron leader with the Indian Air Force.
He was awarded Hero of the Soviet Union and went on to become a test pilot in India.
He married and had two children.
He had a conversation with then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi while in space.
