Considered one of the best defenders in Mexico's history, he has been a captain for both the Mexican club Atlas and the Mexico national team. He became the first player to captain his national team in four consecutive editions of the FIFA World Cup.
He played youth soccer for Atlas before making his senior debut for the team in 1996.
He was named as the Third Most Popular Player in the World by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics in 2006. In 2018 he became the third player in history to compete in 5 World Cup tournaments.
He was married to actress Adriana Lavat from 2001 to 2007. He later married Jaydy Michel in 2011.
He played alongside Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
