Over the course of his forty-year cinematic career, this popular actor appeared in more than seventy Hindi-language movies, including the Academy Award-nominated film Mother India. He won a Filmfare Award for his role as Ram in the 1963 movie Dil Ek Mandir.
Before pursuing an acting career, he worked for the Mumbai Police Department.
Suffering from both Hodgkin's disease and throat cancer, he died in his late sixties.
He and his wife Jennifer (also known as Gayatri) became parents to children named Vastavikta, Puru, and Panini.
He and fellow Bollywood star Shashi Kapoor were both in the cast of the 1965 film Waqt.
