In 2012, he became the first pitcher in MLB history to win a Cy Young Award while using the knuckleball as his primary pitch; led the National League in strikeouts and shutouts with the New York Mets in 2012. In 2017, he began playing for the Atlanta Braves.
He was a member of the United States baseball team that won a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
He began focusing on his knuckleball pitch in 2006 after already pitching in the MLB for 5 years.
He had two sons and two daughters with his wife Anne.
He won his National League Cy Young Award the year after Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw won; Kershaw then won it again a year after Dickey.
