He attended St. Joseph's College of Commerce. He started out working as a theatre actor and street performer before establishing himself in film in the 1990s.
He's won several awards throughout his career, especially for his work as a supporting actor and in antagonist roles.
He was married to Lalitha Kumari from 1994-2009 and had three children with her. He married Pony Verma in 2010.
He and Mohanlan Nair both starred in Iruvar, one of Raj's many award-winning films.
