Pope remembered for his humanism and intellect who served from 1447 until his death. Among his notable accomplishments were rebuilding the Vatican and restoring Rome's water supply.
He was a passionate reader who worked as a tutor and earned a Theology degree in 1422.
He took the name Nicholas as an ode to Bishop Niccolo Albergati, who mentored him and sent him on a tour of Europe prior to his papacy.
His birth name is Tommaso Parentucelli. His father was a doctor who died when Tommaso was young.
He and Pope Pius IX both held the posiiton of Pope in the Catholic Church.
