He was heavily promoted by Isaac Stern and Pablo Casals, who discovered him while visiting Israel in 1962 and urged him to study with them at the Juilliard School.
He received the National Medal of Arts from President Ronald Reagan in 1983.
He fathered two children with his former wife actress Tuesday Weld, whom he married in 1985.
He collaborated with many well-known composers and musicians, including Leonard Bernstein.
