He finished his piano studies at Rome's Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in 1956 with highest honors.
He was close friends with the famed Italian pianist and conductor Carlo Zecchi.
His parents often hosted well-known musicians in their home such as violinist Gioconda de Vito and tenors Giacomo Lauri-Volpi and Tito Schipa.
He produced the definitive edition of Muzio Clementi's symphonies as part of a research grant while he was living in the United States.
