Burundian politician who served as the President of Burundi representing the National Council for the Defense of Democracy party. He also served as Deputy Secretary-General for the CNDD-FDD in 1998.
He attended the Institut d'Education Physique et des Sports at the University of Burundi. He earned his degree in sports education in 1990 and started his career as a professor at Lycee de Muramvya.
He was awarded several honors for his work in politics including the Prix Pour la Paix in June of 2006 and the Oscar de Paid Award in 2007.
He was born in Burundi's capital city of Bujumbura and was raised in the province of Ngozi in Northern Burundi.
After declaring he would run for a third term, he faced political protest and was forced to meet with UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon.
