Pierre-Jean De Smet
Missionary
The Jesuit missionary who was set out to Christianize the American Indians, and became the arbiter in disputes between them and the settlers.
He traveled to America, where he became an ordained priest.
Rather than trying to take the Indians by force, he used negotiation.
He was born in Belgium, practiced abstinence, and gave his life to the church.
Ferdinand Konscak was another well-known Jesuit missionary and explorer.
