He moved from Hong Kong to the United States to study film at UCLA.
He produced the 2009 film Bodyguards and Assassins, which won an astounding eight awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.
He had a daughter with actress Sandra Ng.
His 1999 film The Love Letter starred Ellen DeGeneres in the role of Janet Hall.
