He won the 1949, 1951, 1952, and 1953 Seattle Golden Gloves titles as well as an Olympic gold medal in 1956 before turning professional in 1957.
He compiled a career record of 15-7-1.
He and his daughters carried the Olympic Torch down the streets of Cleveland, Ohio.
He fought Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson in his first professional fight.
