Bandleader, orchestrator, composer, and conductor who played a key role in the easy listening movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He is best remembered for "The Song from Moulin Rouge," which was featured in the classic 1952 film Moulin Rouge.
He studied violin and piano as a child, but started conducting music after sustaining a hand injury. He was popular on the CBC from 1933 until 1940 and also worked for Voice of America.
He released over 70 albums in his career as a bandleader and gained fame for his arrangements of pop and Christmas standards.
He was married to Mary Palange. He grew up the oldest of seven siblings.
He and Joe Newman were both accomplished 1950s bandleaders.
