Oscar-nominated actress of the film and stage who had memorable appearances in several films, including The Story of Ruth and The Sound of Music.
She made her stage debut in 1910, as part of the chorus for Naughty Marietta.
Her final screen appearance was as the Mother Abbess in the 1965 film The Sound Of Music, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
She married her second husband, William H. Walling, in 1946.
She was a member of the famed Algonquin Round Table with Tallulah Blankhead.
