She opened the first gallery of her collected modern artwork in London in 1938. Her their gallery, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, was later established in Venice, Italy.
Her patronage launched the careers of renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock and William Congdon.
Her wealthy father, Benjamin Guggenheim, was one of the victims of the 1912 Titanic disaster. Peggy Guggenheim inherited his fortune when she turned twenty-one.
She was briefly married to the acclaimed modernist painter Max Ernst.
