Children's writer whose best-known works include The Volcano Disaster, Earthquake Terror, and I'm Not Who You Think I Am. Her books have won more than fifty state young reader awards.
She grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She developed polio at the age of twelve and was hospitalized for nearly a year.
Her memoir, Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio, received the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award in 1998.
She adopted two children, Bob and Anne, with her husband, Carl Kehret. The family lived first in California and later in Washington.
Her novel, Abduction!, won the Mark Twain Award in 2007.
