Known for his mastery of composers Josef Suk and Vitezslav Novak and for his intellect, musicality, and performance style.
He performed in public for the first time when he was 16, followed by his debut with the Czech Philharmonic two years later.
He was awarded the Wiener Flötenuhr twice, in 1971 and 1982.
He was born the son of piano virtuoso and teacher Ilona Štěpánová-Kurzová and musicologist and pianist Václav Štěpán. He was also the grandson of famed piano teacher Professor Vilém Kurz.
He was a master of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's piano concertos and released several recordings devoted to them.
