Paulo Freire
Philosopher
Brazilian philosopher who was instrumental in the development of the pedagogy field in the twentieth century. His book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, became one of the most important texts in the critical pedagogy movement.
He attended the University of Recife where he studied law and philosophy.
Following a military coup in Brazil in 1964, he was imprisoned for treason and was later exiled to Bolivia.
He married Elza Maia Costa de Oliveira in 1944 and they had five children.
Georg Hegel was considered to be an influence on his work.
