Theatre director best known as the first-ever director of the influential improv comedy troupe The Second City. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2011.
He founded the Playwright's Theater Club while a student at the University of Chicago.
His Second City improv group has produced some of the most recognizable names in American comedy, including John Belushi and Chris Farley.
His mother is "Improvisation for the Theater" author Viola Spolin.
He was married to "Freaky Friday" actress Barbara Harris until their divorce in 1959.
