Estonian chemist who is best known for his revelations in researching oil shale. He was the president of the Estonian Naturalists' Society from 1929 to 1936.
He was educated at the University of Tartu, where he eventually conducted a great amount of his research.
He served as the Estonian Minister of Education from 1939 to 1940.
He was born and raised in Tallinn, Estonia where his father worked for a gas factory.
He was born in the same country as astronomer Ernst Opik.
