An American TV, film and stage actor best known for his Broadway leading role in Tennessee Williams' play The Night of the Iguana, and for his film role in the original Stepford Wives.
After attending the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he studied drama.
Was a member of the US Army Air Corps during World War II and also directed short training videos.
in 1956, he married actress Cynthia Baxter. Together, they had two sons and remained married until his death in 1994.
He received critical praise for starring in John Huston's film The Kremlin Letter in 1973.
