She was not allowed to watch television growing up and didn't go to her first movie until age 16.
Her film I've Heard the Mermaids Sing was voted as one of the 10 best Canadian films ever as polled by 100 international critics.
She had two children named Evy and Jacoba with her former partner, film composer Lesley Barber. She later began dating head of CBC Radio Heather Conway.
Her 2000 film Happy Days was an adaptation of the Samuel Beckett play of the same name.
