His father was a jockey so he grew up at the track.
After his retirement from jockeying he became a trainer, which kept him heavily involved in racing.
His father, Jimmy, and his brother, Paul, were both successful jockeys.
He was a contemporary of fellow Irish racing legend Tony McCoy.
