Oswald Avery

American physician best known for identifying DNA as the material that made up genes and chromosomes (the Avery–MacLeod–McCarty experiment).
He attended Colgate University and went on to study medicine at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He opened his first practice in 1907.
He was nominated for a Nobel prize multiple times during his research, but never won.
He never married, but lived for thirty five years with friend and colleague, immunologist Alphonse Dochez.
Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase continued his research and went on to discover the DNA double helix.
