Television and theatre actress best known for originating the role of Abuela Claudia in the stage production of In the Heights. She later reprised the role for the 2021 In the Heights movie. She has also made appearances on the television series Shades of Blue and the Netflix show Orange Is the New Black.
She began her professional acting career in 1984.
She received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her work on In the Heights. In 2013, she was named by Latina magazine for being one of the 50 Best Latin Singers and Pop Stars of All Time.
She was born in Cuba, but spent most of her childhood living in Miami and Puerto Rico.
She starred in the show Saint George along with comedian George Lopez.
