He dropped out of Harvard University after his first year of study.
He lived most of his life in Baltimore, Maryland and died in the Johns Hopkins Hospital from complications of Crohn's disease.
He married Frances Leonard in 1931.
He and F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote streetcar advertisements for the same New York company.
