Fifteenth President of the Philippines who took office in June 2010. TIME magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2013.
After finishing his education in Manila, he joined his family in exile in the U.S., but returned after the assassination of his father.
Under his presidency, the country's economy greatly improved, and he stood up to the regional juggernaut, China, in their claim to the nearby waters of the South China Sea.
A fourth generation politician, he saw his father become a their political martyr, and his mother, Corazon Aquino, become president.
He was succeeded by Rodrigo Duterte.
