He grew up in Vila Isabel and studied medicine before deciding to pursue a career in music.
A forceps mishap during his birth caused him to have a malformed chin, which he would be self-conscious about throughout his life.
He married Lindaura Martins but was known for having affairs with many women.
He collaborated with songwriter and composer Ary Barroso on the song "De qualquer maneira."
