He moved in with his tennis-coach brother, Eduard, to practice tennis.
His favorite players growing up were Ivan Lendl and Yannick Noah.
He married wife Irina in 2006 with whom he fathered a daughter, Ekaterina in 2012.
He lost to Andy Murray in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
