Two-time Tony nominated actor who won a Drama Desk Award for his iconic portrayal of Hamlet in 1969, and starred as Merlin in the 1981 film Excalibur.

Before Fame

He served his National Service as a gunner in the Airborne Division before making his professional acting debut at the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1960. He made his London debut in a 1962 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Royal Court Theatre.

Trivia

He won his second Drama Desk Award in 1974 for his performance in Uncle Vanya. He was nominated for three BAFTA Awards, for his roles in The Bofors Gun, Inadmissible Evidence, and The Gangster Show: The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

Family Life

He married actress, Jill Townsend in 1971. The couple divorced in 1977 after having a son.
