Former journalist who penned the immensely important and successful novel, Mussolini: A New Life and has appeared on BBC TV.
He matriculated from the University of Cambridge in 1980.
He once wrote a hugely successful, albeit controversial, profile piece on Silvio Berlusconi, former Prime Minister of Italy, for The Spectator.
He was born in England, but settled later in his life in Italy. He married Stella Gonet in 2005.
Both he and cartoonist Jacki Randall have worked for The Spectator.
