German New Wave singer known for her hit 1983 song "99 Luftballons." Her solo albums include Bongo Girl, Chokmah, and Made in Germany.
Early in her career, she performed with a German pop band called The Stripes.
She established a German private school called the Neue Schule Hamburg.
She grew up in Breckerfeld and Hagen, West Germany. She later had three children with Swiss film actor Benedict Freitag: Christopher and twins Sakias and and Larissa. Christopher died at age 11 months. She later had two more children with Phillipp Palm, Samuel and Simeon.
She covered the David Bowie song "Starman" on her 2007 album Cover Me.
