He began his career with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1947.
He retired with 2,663 hits and a career batting average of .288.
He married Joanne Statler in 1948, and together the couple had two daughters named Tracy and Bonnie.
He was named AL MVP in 1959 while playing for the Chicago White Sox. The following year Roger Maris took his first of two AL MVP Awards.
