Star of stage and screen who typically played elderly woman, such as the housekeeper Adelaide Brubaker on the sitcom Diff'rent Strokes. She also played post office clerk Miz Emma Tisdale on The Dukes of Hazzard.
She began her entertainment career as Baby Nedra, on the vaudeville stage, and sang with a popular big band in the 1930s, but not until her post-retirement days did she take up acting.
Among her most notable roles, she played Edith Bunker's favorite aunt, Iola, in All in the Family.
She had three children with her husband Oren Volz.
In her final film appearance, The Great White Hype, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Jeff Goldblum, she was credited, typically, as "old lady."
