Naomi Sims
Model
As the first black supermodel, she broke the color barrier starting with the cover of Ladies Home Journal in 1968.
Finding the modeling agencies were reluctant to hire a black woman, she appealed to fashion photographers themselves, with some success.
She modeled for designers like Halston, Fernando Sánchez, Teal Traina, and Giorgio di Sant'Angelo.
Her parents divorced when she was young. Shortly afterwards, her mom became seriously ill and Naomi was taken by a foster home.
She paved the way for black supermodel Naomi Campbell.
