One of the greatest Indian filmmakers in contemporary history who won his seventh National Film Award in 1984.
He was briefly a part of the Communist Party of India after graduating from the University of Calcutta.
He was known for the films Khandhar, Aamaar, Kharji, and Akaler Sandhane.
He was raised in a Hindu family in the small town of Faridpur. He was married to Geeta Sen.
He joined Satyajit Ray as one of the best-known Bangladeshi filmmakers.
