In the fourth film in the Superman series, the Man of Steel battles against Lex Luthor and Nuclear Man. The film grossed $36 million at the box office, less than half of what any of the previous three films grossed individually, marking it as a commercial failure. 

Trivia

The film marked the final time Gene Hackman portrayed Lex Luthor. It was the last Superman film released for nearly two decades until 2006's Superman Returns.
