A car salesman named Jerry Lundegaard works for his father-in-law at an Oldsmobile dealership. Desperate and money-hungry he has gotten himself in financial problems after embezzling a lot of money, and he must quickly look for a solution. With his back against the wall, he decided to stage a kidnapping of his wife, however the planned non-violent kidnapping attempt went way off track.
