The film tells the story of Patrick, an Irish man who identifies as transgender. He renames himself Kitten, becomes involved with a rock group and moves to London in hopes of finding his mother.

The film was written and directed by Neil Jordan. It is based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Patrick McCabe.
