Inspired by the true story of the infamous 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese in New York City. The murder became a national sensation when The New York Times published a front page story titled "37 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police." Parts of the report were later discredited.

Trivia

Genovese was killed on Austin Street in Kew Gardens. The exteriors of the film were shot on Austin Street in Forest Hills.
