London rapper who performed with the Native Tongues and released several Grammy-nominated solo works, including her 1990 album Down to Earth.
Born Simone Gooden, she rose to fame with the Native Tongues, a positive rap group, and had the Grammy-nominated hits Monie in the Middle, and It's a Shame (My Sister) with them.
She was the first BritHop artist to be signed to a major record deal.
Her father was a notable London jazz musician and her brother is the techno musician Dave Angel.
She was a protege of Queen Latifah, rapping alongside her in Native Tongues and appearing in her track "Ladies First."
