Moneta Sleet Jr.
Photographer
Civil rights-era photojournalist who helped capture iconic scenes, including the image of Coretta Scott King at her husband's funeral.
After earning a master's in journalism he joined prominent black publications like Our World and Ebony.
He did not claim objectivity in his photography, saying instead that the oppressive sides of the story were obvious.
He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Upon learning that there were no black photographers at her husband's funeral, Coretta Scott King insisted on bringing in Sleet and giving him the best vantage point.
