Miroslaw Hermaszewski
Astronaut
The first Polish cosmonaut, he participated in the 1978 Soyuz 30 mission. He earned a Hero of the Soviet Union honor for his bravery on the space flight.
Ukrainian nationalists murdered nineteen members of his family in the Volhynian massacres during World War II.
He joined the Soviet Interkosmos space program in 1978.
His marriage to Emilia Hermaszewska produced a son and a daughter.
He was born in the same year as fellow cosmonaut Leonid Kizim.
