Austrian-American actor and professional wrestler whose large physique lead to him often playing gangsters, strongmen and other intimidating types. Some of his best known roles include Splitface in 1945's Dick Tracy and The Strangler in 1950's Night and the City.
He emigrated to New York City with his family at age 6. He was an outstanding athlete, becoming a professional wrestler, basketball player and football player.
His theirly slurred speech was due to an injury sustained to his Adam's apple while wrestling.
He was married to Jeanette Briggs from 1943 to 1950 and to Sylvia Weinblatt from 1968 until his death.
He was directed by Billy Wilder in the 1959 comedy classic Some Like it Hot.
